Why We Dislike Lawyers

Honest fool: "If I gave you $1,000 would you answer two questions?" Lawyer: "Certainly. What's the second question?"

lawyers in general have earned a bad reputation. They are greedy, and take every advantage, using every legal trick they know. They’re interested only in winning, and will lie and manipulate. They use sophistry to draw distinctions where none really exist, and use dense and confusing legal language to make it impossible to do anything without them. Also include how this draws a certain crowd of people.

Can you blame them though? If I want someone representing me, I wan't someone who will use everything in the book to win my case. Plus, you have an opponent who wants to win too. I'm not saying they are all bad people. Just that it's their job to be that way. Essentially, it all comes down to our adversarial legal system.

Doesn't this seem to be a problem though? Instead of a system that looks at evidence and comes to a logical and humane solution. You have loop holes, contracts, and long drawn out battles. Interesting how "battles" are introduced. Why is justice wrapped in battles? Shouldn't it be wrapped in reason?

  1. The United States is a nation of laws. It uses those laws to decide what is just. Besides, do you KNOW how many crazy people there are in courtrooms? Do you really want to go on their opinion?

  2. its really hard to see both sides, on one end a good lawyer can get you out of trouble when you are innocent, on the other end they can get murders off the hook entirely...

  3. I don't know, law is super confusing. I know a couple people who are trying to become lawyers, and the're pretty awesome. Hopefully they stay the same and don't get changed by the legal system

  4. My old boss was a lawyer. He was the worst man I've ever met. He mantipulated the entire staff and still does. He nickles and dimes them finding loopholes in the labor laws...

A sad excuse for a human.

  5. Jesus, I hope they don't either. This is mainly about public perception. Not that, they themselves will change. I'm sure many lawyers are cool and others not so cool. I'm just giving a reason for the perception of them.

  6. I wonder what it would be like if we weren't in the monetary system. Things would probably be a lot different.

  7. I agree, I see where our legal system works sometimes, but the faults are very noticeable.

  11. true but they have to go chasing after it and stuff. and what jdf said, basically =]

  12. sadly that's not how the law works. it's what you can prove not whether its true or not. There are so many loop holes and various court rulings that can let a lawyer get away with anything. Its a shame really....

  13. There are many good lawyers out there, but many lawyers are just out there for the money.

  14. Lawyers are not all that bad... They are viewed negatively because of the nature of work they provide, but on a whole, the profession is needed or companies would fall into chaos. Maybe that is needed then *shrugs*

  16. You should really watch the movie "I just didn't do it" (also known as それでもボクはやってない "soredewa boku wa yatte nai")

It's the story of a young Japanese man who gets caught up in the legal system for a crime he didn't do. It's absolutely ridiculous to see how it turns out! I really recommend it.

  17. I have a friend who is in law school. And yeah, he's learning every trick in the book. But, as you said, people want an attorney who wins the case at all cost.

  19. Yeah, some lawyers are complete slime, but there are some that will fight for the common person that has been wronged.

  21. This exactly why i hate law (as a course), and as a song from Tool puts it: "liar, lawyer tell me what's the difference..."

  22. Hate lawyers and politicians but they are very useful when needed.
    Especially lawyers.

  25. I've never had to deal with a lawyer, but I'm sure I will someday.
    God I cannot wait.

  26. That's why we have murdering psychopaths and rapists getting justice only to find themself back in the court trying to pretend "oh I did not do it" AGAIN... Somtimes DNA can be a beautiful thing. Then who can really lie? But if it were me I would want the most cut throat lying, smart ass in the law firm representing my case.. Of course I don't believe I would ever need one... But they can come in handy at times.

  27. Sorry as I am new to this so I did not see how to reply to your question at hand. Well I would take a look at John Keats. He was an interesting fellow good heart tragic death like his Mother and Brother.. But he at least met the greatest love of his life. Even though it was short lived I believe he died at 24. He thought himself a failure at his death bed but today he is one of the greatest.

  29. Lawyers are cunning, greedy and take a mile if you give them an inch because it's their JOB to see through every loophole possible and extort and exaggerate facts for as much as they can. Honestly, I can't really blame them for taking what they can in life. They're sharks, after all.

  31. I like the layout you used on this blog :)

  32. there has to be that boundary between law and people, they are that.

  33. Good insight here. It is a bit unfair but hey, we'd all get the best if we could, too.

  34. Over-legislation has taken the air of what our forefathers created and turned it into a mockery. There is no interpretation of law by the judges, and the system of checks and balances has been derailed. There is no justice.

    I say REVOLT!

  35. I work with lawyers all the time, dealing with patent law and inventions. Overall, they are just in it for the money in my estimation, and we give them a lot of our cut of the money. But they are a necessary evil, and as long as they know that you can fire them at any time, you can keep them on a pretty tight leash.

  36. Lawyers vary a lot. Hard to tell which to trust.

  38. that joke makes me laugh so much...

i could never be a lawyer because i respect the art of honest argument too much...

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's kind of silly. You need someone to represent your side of the law, and if you were on the bad side, you obviously need someone who will lie to "prove" your innocence. There will always be someone to play the part, given enough money.

  40. Lawyers are always conveniently atleast 50 bucks more than the ticket.

  41. Lawyers? no thanks. Only the rich ones will do a good job

  42. A lawyer that can't argue to get an incredibly high rate per hour probably isn't much of a lawyer at all. Unfortunately, you probably get what you pay for.
